The Adrian Lions Club, with the support of the Adrian Chamber of Commerce, is again sponsoring a Sight and Safety Night this year. It will be held on Halloween, Monday, October 31, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Members of the Missouri Press Association (MPA), the newspaper trade organization in the state, elected weekly newspaper publisher Steve Oldfield to be MPA president in 2006. The election of officers and directors was held September 23 at The Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark, during the 139th annual MPA Convention.

The On Tuesday the Adrian Lady Blackhawks volleyball squad traveled to Cass-Midway for their first WEMO Conference game of the season. They won in two games, 25-23 and 26-24. On Thursday night, at home, they lost in three games, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-14.

On the road this past Friday the Adrian Blackhawks invaded Sherwood Marksmen territory for a non-conference contest. The Blackhawks jumped out to an early 14-0 first quarter lead and went on to crush the Marksmen on their field 55-14.

The first annual WEMO Professional Development Conference, held Wednesday, September 21 at the Archie School, was well represented with teachers from the conference schools in attendance. Over 360 educators attended the conference.

Last Saturday the streets of Amsterdam, in western Bates County, were crowded as lots of folk were there to enjoy the Jubilee parade and all of the activities.

On Saturday, September 18 the 1975 Missouri Western State College Football Team, including Mark Lovelace, was inducted into Missouri Western's Hall of Fame. The 1975 Griffon football team made history with a season ending victory in the Mineral Water Bowl, 44-0 over Graceland.

Jane P. Hooker, 85, Temple, TX, formerly of Appleton City, MO, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at the Temple Nursing Home, Temple, TX. Graveside services were held Saturday, September 24 at the Altona Cemetery, Altona, MO, officiated by Rev. Henry Green, Cleveland Baptist Church.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian Tuesday, September 27 from 1-6 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building.

Adrian VFW held a special ceremony Friday, September 16 in observance of the National Day of Tribute to our country's POWs and MIAs. The event was held at the VFW building.

Coming off the Archie tournament as champions, the Lady Blackhawks put their perfect 8-0 record up against the Lady Marksmen of Sherwood and easily defeated their guests in two games on September 12. The Lady Blackhawks first loss of the season was to the Lady Bears.

The Tipton Cardinals came to Adrian last Friday night for a non-conference clash in football action. On a perfect night for football, the Blackhawks gave the hometown fans a lot to cheer about as they upended the Cardinals 31-6. Watch the highlight video here.

Aubrie Oates would like to announce the birth of her new brother and sister. Oliver Wade Oates and Alisa Lynn Oates were born on September 8, 2005. Oliver, the first born, weighed 6 lbs 11 ounces and was 18 3/4 inches long. Alisa came 9 minutes later, weighing 6 lbs 5 ounces and measured 18 1/2 inches long. They were proudly welcomed home by Mom and Dad, Allison and Heath Oates, grandparents Scott and Janet Oates and Linda Zellmer, and many other family members.

Mary Irene King, 96, Butler, Missouri, formerly of Archie, Missouri, died Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at Willow Lane Nursing Center, Butler, Missouri. Funeral services were held September 18 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri. Officiated by Pastor John Davis and Rev. Paul Burhart.

Harriet Seymour Morriss Logue, 92, Archie, Missouri, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at her home. Arrangements under the direction ofAtkinson Funeral Home, Archie, Missouri.

Hobert Dean Miller of Urich, Missouri departed this life Monday, September 12, 2005, Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton, Missouri at the age of 70. Funeral services were held Friday, September 16, 2005 at the Dickey Funeral Home in Garden City, Missouri. Rev. Griffin Simmons officiated.

Mary Agnes Halfert, age 90 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. Funeral services were Friday, September 16, 2005 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Pasrtor Eldon Allen officiating.

Beverly Gaston, age 75, of Kansas City, KS, wife of George Everett Gaston, passed away Tuesday, September 13. Funeral services were held at the Maple Hill Funeral Home on Friday, September 16.

The Adrian Volunteer Fire Department held a 15 hour boot block last weekend in support of Hurricane Katrina Victims. $3706.05 was collected at the intersection of US 71 and M18 highways. Chief Gary Dizney sounded his appreciation for everyone that opened their pockets in this time of need. "We had two consecutive boot blocks that raised over $7000. It just shows you what type of community Adrian, Missouri is."

On September 8 Sgt. Charlie Chapman was dispatched to Parkwood Apartments on a report of a man holding a knife to a female's throat, threatening to kill her. The woman suffered minor injuries and the man is being held in the Bates County Detention Center.

The regular meeting of the Adrian Board of Alderman was held Thursday, September 8 in the City Hall. The sewer contract was awarded to Hettinger Excavating for $89,300. The board then reviewed a new liquor ordinance and changes were made.

Yoss Thriftway presented the PTO with a check for $2346.39, 1% of all collected sales receipts for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Brandon and Christine Shannon of Grandview, Missouri, announce the birth of their daughter, Emily Diane Rose, born Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Truman Medical Center. She weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. and was 19 ¼ inch long.

Kristi and RC Cumpton, Adrian, are the proud parents of a new baby girl, born August 31, 2005. She weighed 7 1bs. 5 ½ oz. and was 18 ¾ inches long. She has been named Paige Elizabeth.

Ms. Young's second grade class went on a field trip to the Adrian Journal Wednesday, September 7. While they were there they learned how the paper was printed, how trophies were engraved and the how them many machines at the Journal are used. The students decided it takes hard work, good spelling and reading, and teamwork to make the paper.

For the third straight year, the Adrian Lady Blackhawks are the champions of the Archie Invitational Tournament. The locals won this year's event by downing the Drexel Bobcats on Saturday.

On Tuesday, September 13, a ceremony was held at the Burruss Farm, 3 ½ miles northeast of Adrian, the farm was recorded as the 65th in the county to be named a Century Farm.

Philip R. Schrock, 58, of Amsterdam, Missouri, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. Services were held Friday, September 9 at 11 a.m. at the Wilson & Son Funeral Home in Drexel, Missouri.

Edward Lee Hansen, age 47, of Bonner Springs, Kansas, formerly of Adrian, Missouri, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005 in Harrisonville, Missouri. Military honors under the auspices of Harrisonville Honor Guard VFW Post 4409.

Charles Grover "Tom" Amos, age 87, of Adrian, Missouri, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. Funeral services were Saturday, September 10, 2005 at the Merwin Christian Church with Brother Alan Black officiating.

The Adrian PTO is having a membership contest for the Jr & Sr. High school students. The Jr. High homeroom class with the most members will receive a pizza party lunch during homecoming week. We will also reward the high school class with the most members a pizza party at their respective float site during homecoming week.

Bates County may be playing host to some of the Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Preparations are being made at Kamp Keirsy, near the Miami School in northwestern Bates County, to accommodate up to one hundred individuals who have been left homeless in the hurricane and its aftermath.

A Freeman, Missouri woman died in a single vehicle accident in Cass County Thursday, September 1. The accident occurred at 6:20 p.m. in the southern part of the county.

In cooperation with the Southwest Missouri Major Case Squad Drug Task Force and the Bates County Sheriff's Department, the Adrian Police Department kicked off Operation Ice Storm by serving two arrest and search warrants in the Adrian area on Wednesday, August 31.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 12 fatalities during the 2005 Labor Day holiday. Last year there were about 20 fatalities. Over the weekend the Patrol investigated 259 traffic crashes, which included 142 injuries and 12 fatalities. Troopers made 177 driving while intoxicated arrests.

With 153 rushing yards and 82 in the air, the Adrian Blackhawks brought home the victory in the opening game of the football season. The final score was Adrian 23, Butler 7.

Adrian's Lady Blackhawks went on the road to begin the 2005 volleyball season. The trip was to Miami for a double dual which also included the Lady Bobcats of Drexel.

Julie Carr, Family and Consumer Sciences instructor at the Adrian R-III High School, is the recipient of the Missouri Teacher of the Year Award from the Missouri Educators of Family and Consumer Sciences for the year of 2005.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Muller of Cleveland, MO and Ms. Donna J. Muller of Adrian, MO, proudly announce the engagement of their daughter, Kaycie Rene Muller to Cory Lee Booher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Booher of Lee's Summit, MO. They are to be married March 4, 2006.

Stacey is the daughter of Steve and Teresa Smith of Adrian, Missouri and Brett is the son of Paul and Bobbi Barbarick of Raymore, Missouri. The couple is living in Peculiar, Missouri.
