Lions Club to hold Sight and Safety Night

The Adrian Lions Club, with the support of the Adrian Chamber of Commerce, is again sponsoring a Sight and Safety Night this year. It will be held on Halloween, Monday, October 31, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Missouri Press elects Oldfield as 2006 President

Members of the Missouri Press Association (MPA), the newspaper trade organization in the state, elected weekly newspaper publisher Steve Oldfield to be MPA president in 2006. The election of officers and directors was held September 23 at The Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark, during the 139th annual MPA Convention.

Lady Blackhawks win over Midway and fall to St. Mary's

The On Tuesday the Adrian Lady Blackhawks volleyball squad traveled to Cass-Midway for their first WEMO Conference game of the season. They won in two games, 25-23 and 26-24. On Thursday night, at home, they lost in three games, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-14.

Blackhawks crush Marksmen 55-14

On the road this past Friday the Adrian Blackhawks invaded Sherwood Marksmen territory for a non-conference contest. The Blackhawks jumped out to an early 14-0 first quarter lead and went on to crush the Marksmen on their field 55-14.

WEMO Conference holds Professional Development Day

The first annual WEMO Professional Development Conference, held Wednesday, September 21 at the Archie School, was well represented with teachers from the conference schools in attendance. Over 360 educators attended the conference.

Lovelace inducted into Hall of Fame

On Saturday, September 18 the 1975 Missouri Western State College Football Team, including Mark Lovelace, was inducted into Missouri Western's Hall of Fame. The 1975 Griffon football team made history with a season ending victory in the Mineral Water Bowl, 44-0 over Graceland.

Lady Blackhawks Defeat Sherwood, Fall to Lady Bears for First Loss

Coming off the Archie tournament as champions, the Lady Blackhawks put their perfect 8-0 record up against the Lady Marksmen of Sherwood and easily defeated their guests in two games on September 12. The Lady Blackhawks first loss of the season was to the Lady Bears.

Blackhawks Score Sound Victory Over Tipton

The Tipton Cardinals came to Adrian last Friday night for a non-conference clash in football action. On a perfect night for football, the Blackhawks gave the hometown fans a lot to cheer about as they upended the Cardinals 31-6. Watch the highlight video here.

Boot Block held for hurricane victims

The Adrian Volunteer Fire Department held a 15 hour boot block last weekend in support of Hurricane Katrina Victims. $3706.05 was collected at the intersection of US 71 and M18 highways. Chief Gary Dizney sounded his appreciation for everyone that opened their pockets in this time of need. "We had two consecutive boot blocks that raised over $7000. It just shows you what type of community Adrian, Missouri is."

Man holds hostage with knife to her throat

On September 8 Sgt. Charlie Chapman was dispatched to Parkwood Apartments on a report of a man holding a knife to a female's throat, threatening to kill her. The woman suffered minor injuries and the man is being held in the Bates County Detention Center.

Aldermen award sewer contract; Approve new liquor ordinance

The regular meeting of the Adrian Board of Alderman was held Thursday, September 8 in the City Hall. The sewer contract was awarded to Hettinger Excavating for $89,300. The board then reviewed a new liquor ordinance and changes were made.

Receipts for Education program is a success

Second graders tour Journal

Ms. Young's second grade class went on a field trip to the Adrian Journal Wednesday, September 7. While they were there they learned how the paper was printed, how trophies were engraved and the how them many machines at the Journal are used. The students decided it takes hard work, good spelling and reading, and teamwork to make the paper.

Lady Blackhawks capture first in Archie Invitational Tournament

For the third straight year, the Adrian Lady Blackhawks are the champions of the Archie Invitational Tournament. The locals won this year's event by downing the Drexel Bobcats on Saturday.

Kamp Keirsey to possibly house evacuees from Hurricane Katrina

Bates County may be playing host to some of the Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Preparations are being made at Kamp Keirsy, near the Miami School in northwestern Bates County, to accommodate up to one hundred individuals who have been left homeless in the hurricane and its aftermath.

Drug Task Force kicks off Operation Ice Storm

In cooperation with the Southwest Missouri Major Case Squad Drug Task Force and the Bates County Sheriff's Department, the Adrian Police Department kicked off Operation Ice Storm by serving two arrest and search warrants in the Adrian area on Wednesday, August 31.

12 die in traffic crashes during Labor Day holiday

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 12 fatalities during the 2005 Labor Day holiday. Last year there were about 20 fatalities. Over the weekend the Patrol investigated 259 traffic crashes, which included 142 injuries and 12 fatalities. Troopers made 177 driving while intoxicated arrests.
