Adrian Fire Department takes first place

Firemen pose with ribbons and trophyFive members of the Adrian Volunteer Fire Department and one member of the Butler Fire Department took part in the Cass County Muster Saturday, August 27. The fire crews participated in nine timed events. The Adrian team won first place ribbons in five events, second place in each of the two others and won a trophy as the first place team.

Hubbard-Johnson united in marriage

Seth Johnson, son of Kevin and Cheri Johnson of Granby, MO and Delisa Hubbard, daughter of Terry and Delia Hubbard, Adrian, MO were united in marriage on June 18, 2006. The couple now resides in Granby, MO where Seth is the new physical education teacher at Granby Elementary and Delisa plans to graduate from Missouri Southern State University in the fall.

Jamboree at Harrisonville

football playersBrice Peel sheds a tackler at the Jamboree on Saturday. Due to inclement weather causing wet fields, the Jamboree that the Blackhawks were to play in was moved to Harrisonville on the synthetic turf. Teams at the pre-season workout were Adrian, Appleton City, Rich Hill and Osceola.

KBRPC receives $10,000 grant from USDA Rural Development

In a ceremony held August 10, 2005, in Clinton, Missouri USDA Rural Development announded a $10,000 grant to Kaysinger Basin Regional Planning Commission (KBRPC). The grant funds will be used to assist in the funding of the 2005 Kaysinger Business Conference, which is scheduled to be held at the Benson Convention Center in Clinton on November 1, 2005.

Super Teens named at the 2005 Missouri State Fair

Rainy weather didn't get down Renner Schaller of Butler, Lacey Lee of Adrian, Ashley Mitchell of Ballard and Jimmy Skaggs of Butler, as they eaqrned the right to be called 2005 Super Teens in the Mathewson Exhibition Center on Sunday, August 14th.

4H Day at Royals

4H PhotoSeveral Bates County 4-H members and their families attended 4-H Day at Royals Stadium on Sunday, August 7, 2005. According to Alan J. Mundey, 4-H Youth Specialist, approximately 400 4-H'ers from Missouri, Kansas and Iowa were in attendance. In addition to watching the Royals take on the Oaland A's, the 4-H'ers were treated to a tailgate party before the game and also participated in a parade around the field.

One dies, another injured near Ballard

car wreckA Clinton man, Chester L. Maytonya, lost his life in a one vehicle accident on Missouri Highway 18 at 2 p.m. on August 5. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol the 2000 Ford was driving westbound when it became airborne and struck a fixed object. A passenger, William A. Hamilton, 17, also of Clinton, received moderate injuries and was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler.

Another fatality on East 18 Highway

On Monday, August 8 at 6:10 p.m., the Missouri State Highway Patrol was summoned to a two vehicle accident eleven miles east of Adrian on M-18 Highway near the Fairview Baptist Church. The Adrian Police, Fire & Rescue and Butler EMS were also on the scene. A Butler teen, Philip G. Pappas was pronounced dead at the scene by Bates County Coroner Gary Schowengerdt. The driver of the other vehicle, Jerry Davis, received minor injuries.

OVEC to hold 67th Annual Meeting

Archie, Ballard, Drexel schools to begin soon

Archie, Ballard and Drexel schools are counting down the days until the 2005-2006 school year begins. Archie and Drexel begin on Wednesday, August 17 while Ballard begins on Monday, August 22. All three schools have new teachers and there are changes in the prices of meals.

Adrian R-III Jr. High football coaches, Don Lile and heath Oates, announce that there will be an informational meeting on Monday, August 22, 2005, at the football field at 5:30 p.m. for parents, players and managers. Players should bring their cleats and be dressed and ready for a short practice.

Adrian to begin new school year August 25

A host of new teachers and two administrators will join the Adrian R-III staff when the first school bells ring Thursday, August 25.

At Circle G Ranch

Over 100 children attended Vacation Bible School during the week of July 18th at the Adrian United Methodist Church. This year's theme was "Circle G Ranch - Where God's Love is in the Center". The children took an adventure through the open door each day as they heard Bible stories and then made crafts and ate special snacks to go with each day's story. They also enjoyed fun games and some great music. On Friday the children treated residents at the Houston Plaza to some special music.

New owners for longtime business

Although a long time Adrian business has changed hands, it will continue to serve the community under the new ownership and with a new name. The Homestead House Restaurant on Main Street, which was most recently owned by bob and Jeri Wilson, was sold to a partnership of local business people, Steve and Linda Oldfield and Randy and Vicki Wimsatt.

Adrian Optimist Club gears up for fundraising effort

Within the next few weeks the Adrian Optimist Club will begin its capital campaign for the new community building. Only through community support can this project achieve reality. The first benefit of donating to the building project is that the community is in need of a new, modern community facility. The old building is no longer able to support the demands placed upon it.

R-3 Staff Members attend Living Textbook Workshop

Two Adrian R-3 staff members, Kim Young and Treva Smith, were two of twenty-three participants that attended the Living Textbook Workshop last week for a three-day meeting at University of Missouri in Columbia. Ten Missouri newspapers, which included the Adrian Journal, sponsored participants.

Donna Mae Schrock, 55, of Amsterdam, Missouri, died Thursday, July 21, 2005 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Services were held Monday, July 25, 10:00 a.m. at the Wilson & Son Funeral Home in Drexel, Missouri. Burial was in Glenwild Cemetary, Cleveland, Missouri.
