Five members of the Adrian Volunteer Fire Department and one member of the Butler Fire Department took part in the Cass County Muster Saturday, August 27. The fire crews participated in nine timed events. The Adrian team won first place ribbons in five events, second place in each of the two others and won a trophy as the first place team.

Seth Johnson, son of Kevin and Cheri Johnson of Granby, MO and Delisa Hubbard, daughter of Terry and Delia Hubbard, Adrian, MO were united in marriage on June 18, 2006. The couple now resides in Granby, MO where Seth is the new physical education teacher at Granby Elementary and Delisa plans to graduate from Missouri Southern State University in the fall.

Brice Peel sheds a tackler at the Jamboree on Saturday. Due to inclement weather causing wet fields, the Jamboree that the Blackhawks were to play in was moved to Harrisonville on the synthetic turf. Teams at the pre-season workout were Adrian, Appleton City, Rich Hill and Osceola.

The Adrian Athletic Booster Club has recently erected three signs that have been placed to the north, south and east. You can view them as you travel U.S. 71 Highway or 18 Highway to the east.

A southbound 1995 International tractor-trailer unit, driven by William Simmons of ElDorado Springs, jack knifed on U.S. 71 at F Highway near Passaic at 8:25 on Thursday, August 25.

Roger George Schlueter, age 67 of Rich Hill, Missouri died Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. Funeral services were Saturday, August 27, 2005 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Pastor Marvin Jamison officiating.

Roy Winfred Vermillion, age 80 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Graveside services were Saturday, August 27, 2005 at the Virginia Cemetery in Virginia, Missouri with Pastor Charles Mathis officiating.

Clarence Wilbur Garren, Jr., age 57 of Independence, Missouri died August 20, 2005 at the Medical Center of Independence. Funeral services were Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Rev. Lonald Bridges officiating.

Bates County won first prize in the Beef display competition at the 2005 Missouri State Fair in Sedalia.

Rachel Bartholomew, 17, of Archie, Missouri won Reserve Champion in the FFA Angus Steer Show at the 2005 Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. She is pictured with Dr. C.W. Long. Rachel is the daughter of Steve & Tammy Bartholomew. She is a member of the Archie FFA.

Gerald and Ramona Anderson of Adrian, Missouri will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on Monday, August 29, 2005.

Robert (Bob) and Charmie Kagarice of Ballard, will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary on August 31, 2005. Mr. and Mrs. Kagarice have three children, Luke, Seth and Isaac.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Shaffer of Adrian, MO announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Dawn to Kyle Ray Wackerman, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wackerman of Adrian, MO. An October 8 Wedding is planned.

James and Darlene Blum and vicki and Everett Grant and James Kiger proudly announce the engagement of their children Samantha Lynn Blum and Jason Wayne Kiger. Both Samantha and Jason are former AHS students. The couple will wed October 1st, 2005.

Jeremy Leister, 16, of Amsterdam won Champion Steer in the FFA Chianina Steer Competition at the 2005 Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. Jeremy is the son of Jeff & Beth Leister. He is a member of the Miami FFA.

Harvey Dene Rusow, 57, Drexel, MO, died Sunday, August 21, 2005 at his home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 24 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri, officiated by Rev. Harry Green.

Roy Lee Berkebile, age 88, of Adrian, Missouri died Saturday, August 20, 2005 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. Funeral services were Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Rev. Jo Hastings officiating.

John Adam Parks, age 22 of Galena, Kansas formerly of Amsterdam, Missouri died Wednesday, August 17, 2005 in Galena. Funeral services were Tuesday, August 23 at the Miami R-1 High School in Amsterdam, Missouri with Pastor Dayne Curry officiating and flag presentation by Cherokee County, Kansas Honor Guard.

Lee Austin Reed, age 86 years, 10 months, and 1 day passed from this life on August 19, 2005. Funeral services were held Monday, August 22, 2005, 2 PM at The Wilson & Son Funeral Home in Drexel, MO.

In a ceremony held August 10, 2005, in Clinton, Missouri USDA Rural Development announded a $10,000 grant to Kaysinger Basin Regional Planning Commission (KBRPC). The grant funds will be used to assist in the funding of the 2005 Kaysinger Business Conference, which is scheduled to be held at the Benson Convention Center in Clinton on November 1, 2005.

Rainy weather didn't get down Renner Schaller of Butler, Lacey Lee of Adrian, Ashley Mitchell of Ballard and Jimmy Skaggs of Butler, as they eaqrned the right to be called 2005 Super Teens in the Mathewson Exhibition Center on Sunday, August 14th.

Shawn and Crystal VanSandt, Adrian, MO, announce the birth of thier daughter, madison Lee VanSandt on July 19, 2005. She weighed 7 lbs. 5 1/2 ozs. and was 20 1/4 inches long.

Andgie and Chad Wiley of Amoret wish to announce the birth of their daughter, Piper Jeanna-Lynn Wiley at 8:42 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Saint Luke's South Hospital in Overland Park, KS. Piper weighed 8 lbs. and was 19 inches long.

Several Bates County 4-H members and their families attended 4-H Day at Royals Stadium on Sunday, August 7, 2005. According to Alan J. Mundey, 4-H Youth Specialist, approximately 400 4-H'ers from Missouri, Kansas and Iowa were in attendance. In addition to watching the Royals take on the Oaland A's, the 4-H'ers were treated to a tailgate party before the game and also participated in a parade around the field.

Eleanor "Pat" Duggan, 81, Adrian, MO, died Thursday, August 11, 2005 at her home. A gathering of family and friends was held Saturday, August 13 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian.

Jeana Patterson Savory, 35, Adrian, MO died Monday, August 8, 2005 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Services were held Friday, August 12, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at the Cleveland Baptist Church in Cleveland, MO. Burial was in the Glenwild Cemetery.

Martin Elwood Smith, age 92 of Hume, Missouri died Thursday, August 11, 2005 at Foxwood Springs Care Center in Raymore, Missouri. Graveside services were 10 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2005 at the Independence Cemetery in Hume, Missouri with Elder Jim Sanford officiating.

Bessie Mildred "Betty" Sheets, age 95 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, August 11, 2005 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. Graveside services were Saturday, August 13, 2005 at the Zion Cemetery in Truxton, Missouri with Rev. Ed Powlishta officiating.

Rusty Gene Shideler, age 49 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, August 5, 005 at his home. Memorial services were held Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at Fontana Park in Fontana, Kansas.

A Clinton man, Chester L. Maytonya, lost his life in a one vehicle accident on Missouri Highway 18 at 2 p.m. on August 5. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol the 2000 Ford was driving westbound when it became airborne and struck a fixed object. A passenger, William A. Hamilton, 17, also of Clinton, received moderate injuries and was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler.

On Monday, August 8 at 6:10 p.m., the Missouri State Highway Patrol was summoned to a two vehicle accident eleven miles east of Adrian on M-18 Highway near the Fairview Baptist Church. The Adrian Police, Fire & Rescue and Butler EMS were also on the scene. A Butler teen, Philip G. Pappas was pronounced dead at the scene by Bates County Coroner Gary Schowengerdt. The driver of the other vehicle, Jerry Davis, received minor injuries.

The 67th Annual Meeting of the members of the Osage Valley Electric Cooperative Association will be held at the Osage Valley Electric Headquarters Site in Butler, Missouri on Thursday, August 18, 2005.

Olive Mae Hunt, age 65, Rich Hill, Missouri, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. Funeral services were Thursday, August 4, 2005 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating and Pastor Glen Randall assisting. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.

Orrin J. "Sonny" Noland, age 66, Butler, Missouri went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at his home in Butler. He was born January 21, 1939 to Orrin J. Sr. and Josephone Hanceross Noland in Omaha, Nebraska. Memorial services were held Saturday, August 6, 2005 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Brother John Davis officiating. Inurnment in the Virginia Cemetery, Virginia, Missouri.

Archie, Ballard and Drexel schools are counting down the days until the 2005-2006 school year begins. Archie and Drexel begin on Wednesday, August 17 while Ballard begins on Monday, August 22. All three schools have new teachers and there are changes in the prices of meals.

The second annyal "Pete Hill Day" was held Sunday, August 7, at the Adrian City Park. A large crowd attended the picnic style affair to honor Gaylord "Pete" Hill as he celebrated his 91st birthday.

Adrian R-III Jr. High football coaches, Don Lile and heath Oates, announce that there will be an informational meeting on Monday, August 22, 2005, at the football field at 5:30 p.m. for parents, players and managers. Players should bring their cleats and be dressed and ready for a short practice.

A host of new teachers and two administrators will join the Adrian R-III staff when the first school bells ring Thursday, August 25.

Over 100 children attended Vacation Bible School during the week of July 18th at the Adrian United Methodist Church. This year's theme was "Circle G Ranch - Where God's Love is in the Center". The children took an adventure through the open door each day as they heard Bible stories and then made crafts and ate special snacks to go with each day's story. They also enjoyed fun games and some great music. On Friday the children treated residents at the Houston Plaza to some special music.

J.D. and Leslie Shrewsbury of Archie would like to announce the birth of their daughter, Kennah Nicole, on July 19 at 3:21 p.m. She weighed 6 lbs. 9 oz. and was 19 in. long. She has a proud big brother, Conner, age 5.The maternal grandparents are Clell and Christy Ogle, Archie. Henry Arthur Stout, age 82, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2005 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. Arthur was born April 19, 1923 in Clarksburg, Missouri, the son of Henry Arthur and Bertha Mae Mock Stout. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Underwood-Steinbeck-Brandtonies Funeral Home with Pastor Karen Sheldon officiating. Patsy L. Yocum Seward, age 65, Butler, MO, died Sunday, July 31, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, MO. She was born January 18, 1940 to Leonard Blane and Doris Marie Hood Yocum in Rich Hill, MO. Edgar Lee Bright, age 72, of Butler, MO died Monday, August 1, 2005 at Willow Lane Nursing Home in Butler. He was born May 15, 1933 to Edgar Otis and Wilma May Arnold Bright in Foster, MO. The 36th Annual McGennis Youth Center Barbecue is set for this Sunday, August 7. It's a day where you can combine fun, good eating, musical entertainment and the opportunity to buy quality craft items at auction.

Although a long time Adrian business has changed hands, it will continue to serve the community under the new ownership and with a new name. The Homestead House Restaurant on Main Street, which was most recently owned by bob and Jeri Wilson, was sold to a partnership of local business people, Steve and Linda Oldfield and Randy and Vicki Wimsatt.

Within the next few weeks the Adrian Optimist Club will begin its capital campaign for the new community building. Only through community support can this project achieve reality. The first benefit of donating to the building project is that the community is in need of a new, modern community facility. The old building is no longer able to support the demands placed upon it.

Two Adrian R-3 staff members, Kim Young and Treva Smith, were two of twenty-three participants that attended the Living Textbook Workshop last week for a three-day meeting at University of Missouri in Columbia. Ten Missouri newspapers, which included the Adrian Journal, sponsored participants.

Donna Mae Schrock, 55, of Amsterdam, Missouri, died Thursday, July 21, 2005 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Services were held Monday, July 25, 10:00 a.m. at the Wilson & Son Funeral Home in Drexel, Missouri. Burial was in Glenwild Cemetary, Cleveland, Missouri.

Marvin and Crystal Porter wish to announce the birth of their first son, Dakota Lane Porter. Dakota was born July 9, 2005 at 8:35 a.m. at the Bates County Memorial Hospital. He weighed 7 lbs. 15 ozs and was 20 inches long.
