McGennis Youth Center BBQ set for August 7

Sunday, August 7, is the date set for the 36th annual McGennis Youth Center BBQ. Started in 1969, the event was set up to be an old-fashioned, late summer country barbecue and give people in the four-county area an opportunity to view the Center.

27th Annual WMAT & MA show sizzles

Unlike last year with the rain and cold winds, this year the sun was out and blazing, bringing temperatures into the upper 90's and lower 100's. But, although every shady spot had its share of takers, the heat didn't seem to deter visitors as hundreds wandered around, looking at the displays and demonstrations of living history.

Carl Lester Crow, 1958-2005

Carl Lester Crow, 46, died July 16, 2005 at Apple Ridge Care Center, Waverly, Missouri. He was born October 14, 1958 at St. Mary's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Lester and Edna Finley Crow.

Thomas Laurence Rich 1941- 2005

Thomas Laurence Rich, 63, of East Haddam, CT, passed away July 5, 2005 at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. His sisters, Patricia and Kerry were with him at the time of his death and throughout his battle with cancer. According to his wishes, Mr. Rich's body was donated for science and educational purposes. A memorial service was held July 16, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at the Underwood-Steinbeck-Brandtonies Funeral Home in Butler.

Brian James Bartlett 1972-2005

Brian James Bartlett, age 32, of Belton, Missouri died Sunday July 10, 2005 in Butler, Missouri. He was born August 10, 1972 to James Francis and Carol Ann Porter Bartlett in Kansas City, Missouri.

Victor Robert "Buster" Ramsey

Victor Robert "Buster" Ramsey, 91, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2005 at the Adrian Manor Nursing Home in Adrian, Missouri. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 14, 2005, 1:00 p.m. at the Underwood-Steinbeck-Brandtonies Funeral Home of Butler with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetary in Butler.

LuCrece B. (Bev) Dowell, 1917-2005

LuCrece B.(Bev) Dowell, who grew up in Adrian, died at her home in Mesa, Arizona on July 1. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Dowell was the daughter of LuCrece Bevingon and Martin Chandler.

Heartland Youth Ministries to attend national finals

The Fine Arts Festival is an event offered by the Assembly of God National Office. This is an opportunity for the youth to participate in many ways: poetry, sermons, drama and music (vocal and instrumental). Heartfire Youth Ministries from Victory Assembly of God, here in Adrian, participates in this fine arts festival in the following events: human video, sign language group, female vocal solo, and spanish vocal solo. All of which were invited to attend the National Finals in Denver, CO, August 1-5th.

Representative Fisher presents proclamation

Missouri State Representative Barney Fisher of Nevada made an appearance at the Adrian City Council meeting last Thursday night and presented the mayor with a state proclamation honoring the city on its 125th anniversary.

Optimist Club begins fundraising for community building project

Several weeks ago, it was announced that the Adrian Optimist Club received a grant for $500,000 from the State of Missouri to build its new community building. The reality is that the Adrian Optimist Club did not receive $500,000. What the Club did receive was the ability to provide Missouri tax credits to those eligible individuals and businesses that make contributions to the building project.

New arrival - Trishtyn Noell

Chase Montoya and Delta DeWitt announce the arrival of their daughter, Trishtyn Noell. She was born on the 4th of July and weighed 6 lbs. 4 ozs. and was 18 inches long.

Julia Sage Womelduff, 38, of Adrian, MO, passed away July 9, 2005, following injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Visitation will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by funeral services at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2005, at the Park Lawn Çhapel, Hillcrest Road at 83rd Street.

Alice Pauline Edmiston, 88, Adrian, MO, died Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at Willow Lane Nursing Home, Butler, MO. Funeral services were held Friday, July 1 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetary, Adrian.

Adrian Fire Dept. and mutual aid units battle structure fires

The Adrian Volunteer Fire Department respended to three separate calls that included two house fires. The fires were at Sixth and Lexington and the other was on W. Third Street.

High speed chase ends in field

Jeremy Robinson was stopped after a high speed chase started in Cass County and eventually led to a stop south of F Highway. The Bates County Sheriff's Dept. also investigated several thefts.

Bloodmobile in Adrian

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian August 2 from 1-6 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building. All types of blood are needed and are greatly appreciated by those in need.

City approves Trash Contract

The City of Adrian voted to approve their trash contract with Bates County Disposal. Rates for reisdents will be $11.50 starting July 1, 2005 and will increase to $12.00 on July 1, 2007.

Three-Alarm Fire on Third Street

A fire on the east side of Adrian drew fire crews from around the area to a residence at 111 W. 3rd. Multiple structures were involved in the fire nearly 30 minutes after the initial alarm was sounded.It is still unsure what the cause of the fire was. Initial reports came in as a hay-bale on fire, but dry conditions quickly propelled the fire onto the first home.Crews from Amsterdam to Harrisonville were called to the scene in attempts to control the fire.

Adrian Celebrates the Fourth

Flags lined Main Street Saturday as the Annual Fourth of July festivities kicked off with a parade down the city's main thoroughfare.Events later moved to the city park for an afternoon of fun before culminating with a truck and tractor pull with fireworks at dusk.Parade entries ranged from churches promoting vacation bible schools to a newly-formed Bates County PT Cruiser Club.Sunday's truck and tractor pull was called off early due to storms that rolled into the area that evening.

Twenty-seventh tractor show on tap

Members of the Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association are tuning up tractors, firing up the steam engines and sprucing up Frontier Village in preparation for the 27th annual Steam and Gas Engine Show.This year, Frontier Village will be awash in Persian Orange, the color of the featured Allis-Chalmers extensive line of farm, construction and other manufacturing type equipment, which includes Simplicity garden tractors, refrigeration equipment, electronics and even golf carts. If it's Allis-Chalmers, it just might be at this year's show in Adrian.

City's roots go deep

The city of Adrian will be 125 years old, on July 6, 2005. It's roots are deep and go back farther than 1880, farther back even than the Civil War.In 1839, a settlement, founded by the Joseph S. McCraw family began near the present site of Crescent Hill. The settlement, called Union Town, grew slowly with the first real house being built by Mr. McCraw in 1842. By 1856 more families had moved into the area and in 1858 the town site was surveyed.

Department investigates several holiday incidents

Major Doug Mullenix of the Bates County Sheriff's Department relates officers have investigated several incidents over the holiday weekend. Senior deputy Chuck Steele was dispatched to a rural Butler address on June 30 in response to a domestic dispute. According to reports, a 17 year old male was taken into custody after allegedly hitting a member of his family and damaging several items at his former home. The young man was charged with felony property damage and is currently being held at the Bates County Detention Center in lieu of $20,000.00 bond.

Rick King joins bank as new employee

The new face at the Adrian Bank is Rick King. King was officially introduced at the Butler Lions Club meeting Friday as the Business Development and Agriculture Representative for the Butler location, by Adrian Bank, president Jack Wagner. King was then brought to the main branch in Adrian for introduction. Gene Irvin, bank CEO, said "We feel Rick is going to be a big asset in the full development of the branch bank in Butler." The plans have King to serve at the manager in Butler with concentration in business development and agriculture.

Bruce's Mini Mart is Adrian Chamber's featured business

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce's featured business of the month for July, is Bruce's Mini Mart, located at 300 north Old 71 Highway.The business, owned by Bruce and Becky Scarborough, opened two years ago, on July 2, 2003, appropriately in time for Adrian's Independence Day celebrations.Bruce, who has worked similar type businesses in the past, in the Kansas City area, picked Adrian as the site for his own business because of the friendliness of the local farmers and the people of Adrian.
