Ground broke for new home

The traditional ground breaking for a Habitat for Humanity home was held Sunday June 26. The fourth home to be built by the group in Adrian will begin building shortly.

Juveniles try to derail train

Sgt. Charles Chapman arrested three juvenile males for attempting to derail a train and for blocking movement. The three had stacked debris on the railroad and stood in front of the train laughing. They were referred to juvenile authorities who failed to see humor in the incident.

Adrian turns 125 years old

This week's focus: The city council. From 1889 to 1912 the Adrian City Council meetings were held in various businesses, usually those owned by council members. In 1900, after a problem with vagrants, the council asked all tramps to leave Adrian.

Relay for Life held

The American Cancer Society held its annual Relay for Life last Friday at the Bates County Fair. The current total for money received this year is $41,000 with more expected to come in.

$400k headed to Adrian

Missouri governor Matt Blunt said today that his administration has approved a state grant that will assist the city of Adrian in revitalizing its downtown business district. The Missouri Department of Economic Development approved a $400,000 downtown revitalization grant through its Community Development Block Grant Program. Check this week's edition for more information.

FCCLA Fixes Lunch

Andrew Underwood and Lisa Wainwright delivered 14 of the 83 lunches prepared by the Adrian R-3 FCCLA. Officers of the Adrian Chamber of commernce gathered at the VFW building for their lunches. The FCCLA is using the meals as a way to raise funds for their national meeting in San Diego.

4th celebration slated for first weekend

The Adrian Optimist Club is firing up for this year's Independence Day weekend. The festivities will take place Satruday and Sunday July 2 and 3. Highlights of the weekend include a truck and tractor pull both nights. Fireworks will also light up the sky on Saturday evening.

Library doors about to open

The recently remodeled building on Main Street will now officially open as the new library. Steve Hubbard, a member of the owner's group passed the keys to library president Patti Bruto and Ruth Ann Ferguson earlier this week.

R-3 Sets preliminary budget

The Adrian R-3 Board of Education met on June 16. In the meeting, they approved their preliminary budget for the upcoming school term. They also accepted the resignation of the special services director.

R-V Board votes to add softball

The Archie R-V school board approved the addition of softball for the 2006 school year. Both Adrian and Archie have added the sport for this season.

Baptist Church keeps growing

The progress on the new construction at the Adrian First Baptist church continues as the windows and doors are in place and siding is nearing completion. All work being done on the church is strictly on a volunteer basis.

Services set for residents

Funeral services for residents Billy Morrow and Daniel Patterson have been set by their families. The visitation for Morrow is Wednesday evening at the Atkinson Funeral Home. The funeral is at Cornerstone Christian Church at 10 a.m. Thursday. Patterson's family will receive vistors at the Atkinson Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Friday June 17. The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church.

Smith competes at college national finals rodea

Steven Smith, is competing in the Bareback event at the 2005 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. This is the second trip for Smith, a junior at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Smith is a 2001 graduate of Adrian High School.

Bloodmobile held in Adrian

Forty-seven units of blood were collected June 7, when the Bloodmobile came to Adrian. First time donors included Brian Booth and Joshua Grimsley. David D. Rusow reached the three-gallon mark. According to the bloodmobile officials, blood is always in need by someone and you must mark your calendar for Tuesday August 2, 2005 for the mobile's return.

Shippy on road to recovery

Sheriff Sid Shippy seems to be on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Surgeons repaired valves and adjusted a stent that had been in place since Marchduring a six-hour surgery. The prognosis for the sheriff appears to be excellent.
